On Workers’ Day, the Niger State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) issued a pressing demand for Governor Bago to address the long-standing issue of unpaid pension arrears and to resume gratuity payments to state and local government workers. This plea reflects the broader concerns of many public sector employees who have faced financial hardships due to delayed compensation.

The NLC has emphasized that these outstanding payments not only affect the livelihoods of retirees but also undermine morale among current public servants. As NLC chairperson, Comrade Ibrahim Gambo, stated, “It is the right of every worker to receive their due payments on time; anything less is a breach of trust.” This statement encapsulates the urgent need for government accountability and responsiveness to the welfare of its workers.

Looking ahead, the Niger State government faces mounting pressure to resolve these pension issues, especially as the state prepares for upcoming elections. Addressing these financial obligations could not only enhance public sector morale but also restore trust in the administration and its commitment to the welfare of its employees.
