Despite the establishment of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which aims to enhance intra-African trade, the movement of people across the continent remains heavily restricted. This paradox is highlighted by the experiences of business leaders like Aliko Dangote, who underscores the barriers that still exist. “We have a single market for goods, but we need to create one for our people to truly thrive,” he stated, reflecting a sentiment shared by many in the business community.
The challenges include stringent visa regulations, inadequate infrastructure, and differing national policies that hinder mobility. While the AfCFTA has made strides in reducing tariffs and boosting trade, the lack of a robust framework for labor movement continues to stifle opportunities for Africans seeking to work or invest in other countries on the continent.
Moving forward, governments must prioritize policies that facilitate easier movement across borders. By addressing these barriers, Africa can unlock its full economic potential, fostering a more integrated workforce and a dynamic regional economy that benefits all its citizens.
