In a significant move towards addressing climate change, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the African Engineering and Technology Network (AFRETEC) are championing green software engineering. This initiative aims to promote environmentally sustainable practices in software development, recognizing the critical role technology plays in environmental preservation.

As part of their strategy, UNILAG and AFRETEC plan to integrate sustainability principles into engineering curricula, ensuring that future software engineers are equipped with the knowledge to minimize their ecological footprint. The collaboration reflects a growing awareness of the tech sector's impact on climate change. "Our goal is to empower students and professionals to create solutions that not only meet user needs but also respect our planet," stated Dr. Adeola Adebayo, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at UNILAG.

Looking ahead, this initiative could set a precedent for other institutions across Africa, potentially leading to a broader movement towards sustainable technology practices on the continent. By fostering a culture of environmental responsibility in software development, UNILAG and AFRETEC not only contribute to the fight against climate change but also prepare a new generation of engineers for a greener future.
