The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) is taking significant steps to address the grievances of over 32 communities in Imo State affected by right-of-way issues. This initiative, which commenced on May 14, 2026, aims to compensate and resettle those displaced by the expansion of transmission infrastructure, a move long overdue in the region.
The affected residents have faced disruptions to their livelihoods and homes due to the construction and maintenance of power lines. TCN's decision to provide compensation reflects a growing acknowledgment of the social impact of infrastructural projects. "Our commitment is to ensure that the rights of affected persons are respected and that they are provided with the necessary support," stated Chijioke Ugochukwu, TCN's Director of Community Relations.
While this initiative marks a positive step towards rectifying past oversights, it also highlights the need for a more proactive approach to community engagement in future projects. As Nigeria continues to invest in its power infrastructure, ensuring that local voices are heard and compensated will be crucial for sustainable development and social harmony.
