In a significant move to address menstrual hygiene and support young girls in Anambra State, Dr. Nonye Soludo, wife of Governor Charles Soludo, has launched sanitary pad banks in 350 secondary schools. This initiative, spearheaded by her NGO, Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo, aims to ensure that students have access to essential hygiene products during their menstrual cycles, thereby reducing absenteeism and promoting health awareness.
The initiative comes at a crucial time when discussions around period poverty and its impact on girls' education are gaining traction in Nigeria. By establishing these sanitary pad banks, the program not only provides practical support but also seeks to destigmatize menstruation and empower young women. Dr. Soludo emphasized, “This initiative is about dignity and ensuring our girls can focus on their education without the fear of embarrassment.”
As the program unfolds, it has the potential to serve as a model for other states grappling with similar issues. Continued advocacy and support for menstrual health will be essential in fostering an environment where girls can thrive academically and socially.
