As Nigeria grapples with escalating insecurity, African Church Primate Julius Abbe has voiced a critical perspective, asserting that self-defence is not the solution. In a recent statement, he emphasized the need for proactive government intervention rather than individualistic approaches. “We must rely on the government to protect us and turn to prayer for divine intervention,” Abbe stated, reflecting a growing concern among religious leaders regarding the state’s ability to maintain peace.

The rise in violence, attributed to various factors including banditry and communal clashes, has left citizens feeling vulnerable. Many have taken up arms, believing that self-defence is their only recourse. However, Abbe's comments highlight a significant tension between grassroots responses to insecurity and the responsibility of the state to ensure safety. He advocates for a collective approach, urging both prayer and civic engagement to hold the government accountable.

Looking ahead, the challenge remains for Nigerian authorities to address the root causes of insecurity effectively. Failure to do so may lead to further erosion of trust in government institutions and a continuation of the cycle of violence.
