The Edo State Chapter of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has taken a significant step by banning the use of unauthorized traditional titles such as Ezeigbo and Igwe outside Igboland. This decision aims to preserve the cultural integrity of Igbo leadership structures and curb the proliferation of these titles in regions where they hold no traditional significance. As part of this initiative, Ohanaeze is also launching a voter mobilization drive, encouraging broader participation in upcoming elections.
“The misuse of our titles undermines the cultural fabric of our people,” stated Chief Chigozie Nwankwo, the Edo State President of Ohanaeze. This assertion reflects a growing concern among Igbo leaders about the authenticity of cultural representation and the importance of maintaining traditions in diaspora communities.
As the voter mobilization drive unfolds, it remains to be seen how these measures will influence electoral engagement and the preservation of Igbo identity in a rapidly changing social landscape. This dual approach highlights a commitment to both cultural preservation and civic participation, suggesting that Ohanaeze aims to reinforce its authority while fostering a stronger political voice for the Igbo community.
