The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the unbundling of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka's Mass Communication program, a significant shift aimed at enhancing the quality of media education. The new structure introduces specialized full-time degree programs, including B.Sc. in Advertising, Broadcasting, Development Communication Studies, Journalism and Media Studies, and Public Relations. This initiative reflects a growing recognition of the diverse skills required in the evolving media landscape.
Stakeholders have welcomed this change as a timely response to industry demands. Dr. Ifeoma Nwankwo, Head of the Mass Communication Department, stated, "This unbundling will equip our students with the specific skills needed to thrive in their chosen fields and better serve the dynamic media industry."
As media consumption and production continuously evolve, the NUC's decision positions UNN to lead in contemporary communication education. This proactive approach not only aligns academic offerings with market needs but also prepares graduates for a competitive job market. The focus on specialized skills is expected to elevate the standard of media professionals in Nigeria, addressing longstanding gaps in training and expertise.
