Nigerians evacuated from South Africa have returned to Lagos, highlighting escalating xenophobic tensions that have put Nigerian expatriates at risk. The evacuees landed at Murtala Muhammed International Airport around 10:15 a.m. after fleeing a series of violent incidents targeting foreign nationals in South Africa.

The recent wave of xenophobia has reignited fears among the Nigerian community, prompting the Nigerian government to facilitate evacuations amid heightened insecurity. Nigerian Ambassador to South Africa, Adamu Sulaiman, stated, “We are committed to ensuring the safety of our citizens abroad, and we will take all necessary measures to protect them.” This situation underscores the ongoing challenges faced by African nations in addressing regional tensions and protecting their citizens.

As the geopolitical landscape continues to shift, Nigeria must prioritize diplomatic engagement with South Africa to mitigate future crises. The return of these evacuees raises questions about the long-term implications for Nigerian-South African relations and the safety of Nigerians living abroad. Moving forward, both governments will need to foster dialogue and collaboration to prevent further incidents and ensure the well-being of their citizens.
