As the world marked World No Tobacco Day, Nigeria continues to grapple with the pervasive threat of tobacco use, highlighting the urgent need for stricter enforcement of existing laws. The 2026 theme, “Unmasking the appeal – countering nicotine and tobacco addiction,” resonates profoundly in a country where tobacco consumption remains alarmingly high, particularly among youth. Despite regulatory frameworks like the National Tobacco Control Act, enforcement has been lax, allowing tobacco companies to exploit loopholes.

Stakeholders emphasize the need for action. Dr. Kemi Afolabi, the National Coordinator of the Tobacco Control Alliance, stated, “We cannot afford to remain passive while tobacco companies target our vulnerable populations. It is time for the government to take decisive steps.” This calls for a renewed commitment to not only implement but also strengthen existing laws to protect public health.

Moving forward, Nigeria must prioritize rigorous policy enforcement and public awareness campaigns to combat tobacco addiction. The challenge lies not only in regulation but in reshaping societal attitudes towards smoking, fostering a healthier future for the nation.
