In a decisive move to protect students’ rights, NELFUND has launched an initiative targeting tertiary institutions that are improperly withholding loan refunds and imposing unjustifiable fee increases. This crackdown comes in response to widespread complaints from students who have not received refunds, despite their loan agreements stipulating timely disbursement.
Recent investigations revealed that several institutions have been delaying refunds, leading to financial strain for many students. NELFUND’s intervention aims to ensure that students are treated fairly and that educational institutions comply with the regulations governing student loans. "We are committed to safeguarding the interests of our students and will not hesitate to take action against any institution that fails to uphold its obligations," stated Dr. Clara Obi, NELFUND’s Director of Student Affairs.
Looking ahead, this assertive stance by NELFUND may prompt significant changes in how institutions manage student loans and fees. The pressure to comply could lead to a more transparent and accountable educational environment, ultimately benefiting students and enhancing the integrity of the academic system in Africa.
