In a significant intervention against human trafficking, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) rescued 15 individuals, including foreign nationals, from a suspected syndicate in Nasarawa. Operating under the guise of an online marketing company, the traffickers exploited victims through deceptive promises of employment and financial gain.
This operation underscores the growing concern over how digital platforms can facilitate human trafficking. The victims, some lured from neighboring countries, were allegedly subjected to harsh conditions while their traffickers profited from their labor. "This rescue highlights our commitment to combat human trafficking in all its forms," stated Iman Abubakar, NAPTIP's Director of Operations.
The incident reflects a troubling trend in Nigeria's economy, where vulnerable individuals are increasingly targeted by criminal networks leveraging technology. As NAPTIP ramps up its efforts, the need for enhanced public awareness and collaboration with tech companies becomes paramount.
