In a proactive move to enhance urban safety, the Lagos State Government has launched the Lagos State Building Insurance Scheme (LAGBIS), mandating compulsory building insurance for all structures. This initiative aims to safeguard lives and properties amid rapid urbanization and increasing construction activities in Nigeria's largest city.
The introduction of LAGBIS comes in response to a series of building collapses that have raised concerns about safety standards in Lagos. The government emphasizes that as development accelerates, so must safety measures. "Safety must match development; it's not enough to build, we must ensure that our buildings are safe and insured," stated Olufemi Okeowo, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development.
This scheme represents a significant step towards enforcing accountability among builders and developers while providing a safety net for property owners.
