The recent decision by the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA Global) to include the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) in the CIA Challenge Exam pathway marks a significant development for the accounting profession in Nigeria. This initiative aims to elevate the standards of internal auditing and provides ICAN members with a streamlined route to attain the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) designation.
Historically, Nigerian accountants faced barriers to global certification, limiting their professional growth. With this new pathway, ICAN members can enhance their credentials and align with international best practices. “This is a monumental step for our members, allowing them to gain global recognition and improve their skills in internal auditing,” remarked Dr. Akin Sanni, President of ICAN.
Looking ahead, this collaboration is expected to foster greater professionalism within Nigeria's accounting sector, encouraging more accountants to pursue advanced certifications. As the global economy becomes increasingly interconnected, the ability for Nigerian accountants to obtain internationally recognized qualifications will not only enhance their individual careers but also contribute to the overall integrity and effectiveness of financial governance in the country.
