Global conflicts are severely impacting Nigeria’s ability to acquire essential military hardware, according to Defence Minister Christopher Musa. He highlighted that ongoing tensions among major powers, including the Israel-Iran discord and the Russia-Ukraine war, are straining supply chains and complicating procurement efforts for nations like Nigeria, which faces significant security challenges.

Musa emphasized the need for a strategic shift towards local defense production to mitigate these issues. “We must invest in our indigenous capabilities to ensure that we are not overly reliant on foreign suppliers,” he stated, underscoring the urgency for a national database to better manage defense resources and enhance coordination among security agencies. This approach could address the persistent insecurity plaguing the nation, from insurgency in the northeast to banditry in the northwest.

As Nigeria grapples with these pressing challenges, the call for self-reliance in defense production could mark a pivotal shift in national security strategy. Strengthening local capabilities not only promises to alleviate the current hardware shortages but also fosters economic growth and job creation within the defense sector, positioning Nigeria for a more secure future.
