In a significant move to enhance the welfare of civil servants, the federal government has announced new incentives alongside a substantial housing deal with the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN). The government has approved an upward review of the Daily Travel Allowance (DTA), estacode, and book allowances, while also introducing a new exit benefit scheme for retiring employees, reflecting a commitment to improve working conditions within the public sector.
The N10 billion housing deal aims to address the chronic housing deficit faced by civil servants, ensuring that employees can access affordable housing options. Emmanuel Addeh reports that stakeholders view these initiatives as crucial for boosting morale and productivity among civil servants. “This is a step in the right direction,” said Dr. Angela Okoro, President of the Civil Servants Union. “It shows that the government values the contributions of its workers.”
Looking ahead, these measures could foster a more motivated workforce and improve public service delivery. However, the government must ensure effective implementation and monitor the impact of these incentives to truly transform the civil service landscape.
