In a bid to enhance safety and streamline traffic flow, the Federal Government of Nigeria has imposed a ban on motorcycles and tricycles, commonly known as okadas and keke marwas, along the crucial Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. This decision underscores a growing concern over road safety, particularly in high-traffic areas where these vehicles often contribute to accidents and congestion.
The ban, announced on June 29, 2026, also extends to the indiscriminate parking of trucks and articulated vehicles, signaling a broader initiative to regulate transportation and improve infrastructure usage. "We are committed to ensuring the safety of all road users and will enforce these regulations strictly," stated Abubakar Salihu, the Federal Road Safety Corps Commissioner.
As Nigeria grapples with increasing road safety challenges, this regulatory move reflects a shift towards prioritizing organized transportation systems. Looking ahead, the effectiveness of these measures will hinge on the government’s ability to enforce compliance and potentially provide alternative transportation solutions for displaced riders. This initiative may serve as a model for other regions facing similar transportation dilemmas.
