Lagos State is reigniting its monthly environmental sanitation initiative, aiming to foster a culture of cleanliness across its local government areas. As part of this renewed effort, the state government will reward the cleanest local government area each month, an approach designed to galvanize communities into action and enhance public health.

The initiative comes at a time when urban waste management has become a pressing issue in Lagos, often exacerbating flooding and health risks. Commissioner for the Environment, Tomiwa Adebayo, emphasized the importance of community engagement, stating, "We believe that rewarding excellence in cleanliness will motivate local governments to take greater responsibility for their environments." This strategy not only aims to uplift standards of sanitation but also to encourage residents to participate actively in maintaining their surroundings.

As Lagos grapples with rapid urbanization, the success of this program could set a precedent for sustainable waste management practices in Nigeria. By incentivizing local governments, the state hopes to create a cleaner, healthier environment that could ultimately enhance the quality of life for all residents.
