In a significant escalation of labor unrest, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) have declared a strike, citing the federal government’s sluggish approach to renegotiating the long-overdue 2009 agreement. This announcement follows a recent settlement reached with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), raising concerns about equity and fairness in handling labor relations across different university staff categories.

The two unions argue that the prolonged negotiations have adversely affected their members, who are demanding better working conditions and fair compensation. "We cannot continue to be sidelined while others are given attention," stated Mohammed A. Ibrahim, President of SSANU. This sentiment reflects growing frustration among non-academic staff, who fear that their grievances will remain unaddressed amid the government's piecemeal approach to labor issues.

As the strike unfolds, the potential for prolonged disruptions in university operations looms large. The federal government must act decisively to engage with these unions and restore dialogue, lest it faces a broader crisis in the already beleaguered educational sector.
