Oil-producing communities in Akwa Ibom State are increasingly frustrated by ongoing gas flaring and a lack of awareness about their rights under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA). During a recent workshop, participants highlighted that despite promises of development and environmental safeguards, many residents remain uninformed about their entitlements and the implications of gas flaring on their health and livelihoods.

“Communities are being left in the dark about the provisions of the PIA,” said Iniobong Udoekong, a community leader. “This ignorance hampers our ability to hold companies accountable for environmental degradation and demand the benefits we are owed.” The workshop aimed to educate attendees about their rights and mobilize collective action against harmful practices.

As awareness grows, these communities are poised to challenge the status quo, demanding not only compliance with environmental regulations but also a fair share of the oil wealth generated from their lands. The push for accountability reflects a broader trend in Nigeria, where host communities are increasingly asserting their rights and seeking sustainable development amid rising environmental concerns.
