The Akwa Ibom government has taken a significant step in public health by launching the Long-Acting Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis drug, LENACAPAVIR (LEN-PrEP), to combat HIV infections in the region. This injectable therapy is designed to provide effective prevention for those at high risk, addressing a critical need in a state where HIV prevalence remains a pressing concern.

The introduction of LEN-PrEP comes amid ongoing challenges in HIV management, with many individuals unable to adhere to daily oral prophylaxis. The state health commissioner, Dr. Iniobong Ememobong, remarked, “This innovative approach will empower our communities to take charge of their health and significantly reduce new infections.” The state has been proactive in its response to the HIV epidemic, implementing various educational and outreach programs aimed at improving awareness and accessibility.

As Akwa Ibom embraces this groundbreaking treatment, the focus will shift toward ensuring equitable distribution and access, particularly in rural areas. The success of LEN-PrEP could serve as a model for other regions, potentially transforming the landscape of HIV prevention across Nigeria.
