In a significant move for African aviation, the African Development Bank (AfDB) has appointed Nigeria's Aviation Minister, Festus Keyamo, to spearhead a comprehensive $7 billion Integrated Aviation Transformation Programme. This initiative aims to modernize and enhance air transport infrastructure across the continent, addressing longstanding challenges in safety, efficiency, and capacity.
Keyamo's appointment comes at a crucial time as the aviation sector grapples with the dual pressures of recovering from the pandemic and meeting growing demand for air travel. The programme is expected to facilitate investments in airports, air traffic management, and regional connectivity, fostering economic growth and job creation. "Our goal is to create a sustainable aviation environment that boosts intra-African trade and tourism," said Akinwumi Adesina, President of the AfDB.
