The University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) is facing a critical capacity crisis, serving over 5 million patients with only 850 beds. As the only tertiary healthcare facility in Cross River State, UCTH is not only overwhelmed by local demand but also bears the burden of patients from neighboring states. This situation highlights a systemic failure in healthcare resource allocation in Nigeria.
Dr. Inyang E. Bassey, Chief Medical Director of UCTH, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, "The hospital is operating beyond its limits, and without immediate intervention, we risk compromising patient care." This alarming statement underscores the dire need for increased funding and infrastructure development to meet the healthcare needs of a rapidly growing population.
With healthcare access becoming increasingly strained, stakeholders must prioritize reforms to enhance capacity and ensure quality care. The government and private sector collaboration is essential to develop a comprehensive strategy that addresses both immediate and long-term healthcare challenges. Failure to act now could exacerbate health outcomes, placing more lives at risk in an already turbulent system.
