This substantial figure has raised concerns about the institution's ecological footprint, prompting urgent calls for action. Vice-Chancellor Folasade Ogunsola has proposed a transformative approach, advocating for the establishment of a plastic recycling plant to convert waste into a wealth-creation initiative.
Historically, waste management has been a persistent issue for universities, often overshadowed by educational priorities. However, Ogunsola emphasized, “We have a responsibility not only to educate but also to lead in sustainable practices.” This sentiment reflects a growing recognition of the need for innovative solutions to environmental dilemmas, especially in urban settings where waste management systems are frequently overwhelmed.
