As Nigeria approaches the crucial 2027 general elections, concerns about the integrity of the electoral process are intensifying. Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Dr. Charles Mekwunye, has voiced strong apprehensions regarding the current structure of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), asserting that its increasing politicisation undermines its ability to conduct credible elections.

Dr. Mekwunye stated, “Under the present structure, credible elections are impossible. We must reassess the independence of INEC to restore public confidence.” His remarks come amid rising tensions and accusations of bias within INEC, which has faced criticism for perceived favoritism towards certain political parties. This has raised alarms among stakeholders who fear that without significant reforms, the electoral process could be marred by irregularities and disenfranchisement.

As Nigeria gears up for the elections, the need for an independent and impartial electoral body has never been more critical. The government and relevant authorities must take immediate action to address these concerns to ensure that the democratic process remains intact and that public trust is restored ahead of the upcoming elections.
